Public Transport

Whether you travel by land, by sea or by air: public transport in Portugal is well organised.

The roads are renovated over practically the whole country. If you choose to rent a car, it is a good idea to rent it at one of the Portuguese firms. The prices are among the lowest in Europe, 40 - 80 € per day. Rental on a weekly basis makes the day-price even lower. You must be over 21 and have had you driver's licence at least one year to be allowed to rent a car.

Buses, trains, trams and the Metro

It is rather inexpensive to travel by bus, train, tram and the Metro in Portugal. It is well organized and quite comfortable. The dense network of buses and trains ensures that even the remotest little town can be reached by public transport.

LisboaCard (LisboaCard)

For the tourist who only has a few days in Lisbon and wants to see a lot, it might be a good idea to buy a LisboaCard, which provides unlimited traveling by buses, trams, "elevadores", the Metro, and the trains to Sintra and Cascais, plus free entrance to museums and monuments, and up to 50% discount on other tourist attractions.

Another possibility

A one-day ticket to Carris' buses and trams and the Metro: 3,35 €..

Unlimited travels. Note: It is not a 24-hour ticket, but valid only on the day it was bought and stamped. Can be bought at Carris on Praca Figueira or on the airport bus, for which it is also valid.
